I found two new nice reviews of my album Radio Silence. The first one is written by Alejandro Hinojosa from Amazings.com.

This composer succeeds in creating an unusual kind of Ambient with this album, with beauty and mystery at the same time, and inspired by the indefinible charisma of the radio as a pioneering means of telecommunication as well as one of the most important ways, if not the main one, through which music has been popularized in the last century.

The second one is by Dene Bebbington, Melliflua.

Laying bare the imagined world “From a Silent Surface” opens the album with effects like sonic stonefalls on a synthetic lake while strange rustling and distorted non-human voices lurk just beyond the foreground. This builds up to a moody drum-esque rhythm and constantly passing air pads and refrains briefly rippling as if they're decayed sirens.

The mood gets thoughtful in the next track “Wishful Thinking”. Voices, including brief operatic vocals, and music are heard intermittently over the white noise of a radio being tuned while pads reverb around the soundscape. A lovely rippling melody on some kind of plucked instrument sound then comes in to finally be joined by a laid back rhythm.

Moreover, the Webography-section of this site is now opened and featuring some of the stuff I've been working on. New material will be added every now and then.

Believe it or not, I'm still here despite the lack of updates lately. Last month was extremely busy and little time was spent on this site. Since last update, beautiful summer has arrived in Sweden, I'm now a proud university graduate, and moreover this site was featured on CSS Impress recently. Yay!

While switching my web host for this site, I started to think about refreshing the design as well - after all it's been over a year since last time, and I've learned many new tips & tricks since then. My aim is to present a site that's pleasant to look at, easy to navigate and that works fine for most users, regardless of their operating systems and web browsers. I'm sure I'll find some bugs along the way, and I'd be happy if you report them to me if you find any.

I also decided to add a new section, "Webography", a portfolio-like page where I'll show some of the web related work I perform. It could be anything from a new web design, an ASP.NET or PHP driven site, or a simple JavaScript or Flash application. For now the section is empty, but there'll soon be some nice stuff online so keep your eyes open!

As I might not be able to get my previous blog entries back, I reckon I'd better move forward with the site as if nothing happened. Maybe it's actually good with a fresh start. To make a long story short, my previous web host all of a sudden decided to cause some disaster by shutting down my account without warning. This included no less than six different sites/domains, including all e-mail accounts connected to these. It took me a few days to set everything straight again, getting a new web host and changing DNS servers for my domains. I still haven't heard anything from the support crew of my old web host, so I don't even know WHY they shut me down. Highly unproffessional, in my opinion.

Anyway, what I was saying just before disaster struck, was that the Italian magazine New Age Music And New Sounds recently featured an article about me and my music. Great fun! Included with the magazine is also a CD compilation, containing, amongst other tracks, my The Tides of Time, from my album Autumn Continent. Many thanks to the editors of this magazine!

Moreover, Remix Romance, the Sally Shapiro-remix album, is out now and featuring my ambient remix of Sleep in my arms. Listen to the preview here:

Whoa, this site has been down for three days now. But I'm finally back! Due to HUGE problems with my previous web hosting service, I now decided to switch host. Let's hope the new one works better.

I'll see if I can get hold of the backup of my old database, as it would be nice to keep all my previous post in this blog. It looks a bit empty now.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

I hope you all had some great days during Christmas and New Year! It's already been a month, time passes so fast and I find that 'real life' has been stealing a lot of time from my music production lately. 'Real life', for me at the moment meaning studying and working.

However there are exciting things happening in my music life as well. Radio Silence was re-released a few months ago, and the latest Music is Art podcast features a whole lot of tracks from it. If you're new to my music, this is a great chance to hear six of my tracks in a free and legal way. You can download the podcast here.

There are more interesting things coming up this spring, including a remix of a relatively new and very talented artist. More to come!

This is the third year that one of my ambient albums make it into their top ten list - which is absolutely amazing! Thanks everyone for your support!

Also, some new reviews of Radio Silence have been dropping in during the last few weeks.

(Click the links to read the full reviews)

Over at Electroambient Space, editor Phil Derby writes:
It is very catchy, and quite different from the dark ambient sound of Secret Observatory, although Jönsson's ability to make more concise tunes was evident on Autumn Continent. This is more like thinking man's ambient dub or trance.

Chuck van Zyl at Star's End has written the following words:
On Radio Silence (73'55"), Between Interval realizes music that inhabits two worlds - one of drones, texture and atmosphere, the other running along a digital plane of entrancing electronica.
...
Radio Silence is a dream with its own soundtrack - a fantasy of a bleak time yet to come.

Finally, Paul from Morpheus Music writes:
Radio Silence presents a series of tracks that alternate between blissfully serene downtempo and cloudy techno ambience. There are some very beautiful melodic tracks where soft beats and moody peripherals hang in the background supporting the attractive lead lines on lush shifting beds of sound.

Summer passed by quite unnoticed here in Sweden. I felt like most of it rained away. Now autumn is here and the nights grow longer and the days shorter. However I've got some great news to share!

My first ambient album, 'Radio Silence', will be re-released in a remastered edition on Spotted Peccary Music. Radio Silence was the first album I did with my 'Between Interval' music project. It was initially released on black CD-R in a highly limited edition, sold through this site. It quickly sold out and was then only available to buy in MP3-format. However, now I'm very happy to tell you that Spotted Peccary has picked it up, releasing it officially on CD on October 9, 2007.

Radio Silence - a dark vision of a future where technology has failed - is the album that started my endeavours within ambient music, followed by Secret Observatory and Autumn Continent. Previews of the remastered version will be available in the discography section very soon!

Speak of the devil, now both my original mix and a Northtribe mix are out on iTunes as a digital EP. Produced a couple of years ago, this track doesn't really represent what my music sounds like today, but it nevertheless has quite a catchy melody and loads of classic trance energy.

Today I'm happy to inform you about two new releases under my Section 9 alias.

Section 9 - Saturn Funk EP is a digital release out on Bonzai's new sublabel Bonzai Fiesta. Saturn Funk contains two tracks with influences from the tribal and groovy side of house and trance music.
Saturn Funk
Ceasefire

Airwave - Trilogique (Section 9 remix) is my laid back progressive remix of the beautiful chillout track originally composed by Airwave. This is also a digital release out on Bonzai Trance Progressive, featuring 9 remixes by different artists. There will be a vinyl out soon as well, containing three of the remixes. Whether my remix will be included on the vinyl isn't decided yet.
Trilogique (Section 9 remix)

Both the Saturn Funk EP and the Trilogique remix are available in the usual stores, such as Beatport and iTunes. I hope you like what you hear!

Sublunar updates

I've got some nice news to share! Sublunar - Sanctuary (Antidote's Tech Mix) was released on vinyl soon two years ago. Sanctuary (Original Mix) was out on vinyl as well, however only in an edition limited to 300 copies. Now, finally, the original mix is out as a digital release, available to listeners all over the world. I produced that track back in late 2003 or 2004, but I think it still stands pretty strong and it was the track that somehow set my "standards" back then within progressive trance/house music production.

That's not all though! Also out now as a digital release is Sublunar feat. Aya - Kojo no Tsuki (Ami Mix)! Kojo no Tsuki is an old Japanese song composed more than a hundred years ago. A few years ago I decided to make a trance remix out of it. My trance remix received some attention and was played in various dj sets and radio shows, however it was never properly released. My friend Nick Beman, alias Ami, made a superb chill remix of my remix - yes that's right, a remix of a remix - and that release is now out on Bonzai Elemental.

Sublunar - Sanctuary (Original Mix)

Both tracks can be found on Beatport. Enjoy the music! :)

Ambient news

If you're a dedicated ambient listener you've probably heard about the Buddha Machine already. If not, I'll give a short explanation. The Buddha Machine is a small music player/gadget released by the group FM3. It contains 9 "built in" ambient loops ranging from a couple of seconds each to about 40 seconds.

The Buddha Machine is driven by batteries, although there's the possibility to connect a power adapter as well. It has a built in lo-fi speaker and a volume control. The speaker gives a lot of static noise and if you turn up the volume loud there will be heavy distortion as well. You can call it funny, silly, genious or crazy, but I received mine the other day and I love it already. :) More info on www.fm3buddhamachine.com/

Speaking of ambient, my album Autumn Continent, released last autumn, both made it into Best of 2006 on Amazon.com as well as Best of 2006 on Backroadsmusic.com. I am extremely happy about this and would like to say big thanks to everyone who listens to and appreciates my music! We need more ambient music in this stressed out world...

Not long ago my Monodrive remix of the classic track 'Deep Forest - Sweet Lullaby' was released on Existence Records. Comments and reactions have been positive, and it was both a pleasure and an honor to remix this gem of a track!

Coming up next is another remix, this time of the beautiful track 'Trilogique' by trance music legend Airwave a.k.a. Laurent Veronnez. My remix will be released under my Section 9 alias on Banshee/Bonzai on April 24th, along with 8 other remixes by other artists. A preview of my remix can be found in the Flash player on Airwave's website. Naturally, a preview will be available on this site as well when the release date is closing in!

Also coming up within a near future are two brand new Section 9 tracks. More info about this soon.

Made up my mind

Referring to the previous post, that is. A pair of new ESI nEar05 studio monitors are now part of my setup, as well as a Soundcraft Compact4 mixer. Both the price and the actual size (they fit well on my desk) were important factors for getting the ESI's, but most important of course the clarity of the sound and the fact that I've been in desperate need of a pair of reference speakers.

I'm slightly unsure about the positioning though. I noticed that if I put them on top of my old speakers, my ears will be in perfect position between the bass and treble speaker elements. However I don't know if my old speakers will produce resonance or affect the sound in other ways. Any monitor/speaker guru reading this who can help? :)

Monitor hunting

I've been on the lookout for a pair of decent monitors for a good while now, but it seems I just can't make up my mind. Up 'til now I've been relying on my AKG K240 Studio headphones and a pair of ordinary hifi JVC speakers, but I really think it's about time for me to get some real studio monitors.

There's the budget choice of ESI nEar05 for around 200 euros a pair. Reviews and tests haven't been overwhelming, but for that price it just might be worth it anyway. Slightly more expensive are the M-Audio Bx5a, or maybe the Yamaha HS50M at 350 euros a pair. They both seem nice, but I'm afraid that their small bass elements can't deliver bass deep enough for my needs. So there's also the option of buying bigger monitors with 8" bass elements, like the M-Audio Bx8a, Tapco S8 or the Yamaha HS80M. Now we're talking 400 - 550 euros a pair. However if I decide to get monitors that big, they'll fill up my desk and I won't have much space left. Maybe I should get a new desk... or maybe I should rebuild my current one. I just can't make up my mind!

I've avoided getting a blog styled website for a long time, but now I've finally given in to it. While working on some graphics updates on this site I figured I might as well leave the 90's behind me (hey, I'm only 7 years late) by removing my old guestbook and code my own blog instead. So here it is, in all it's glory! As one might expect, most of my posts will probably be more or less music related, but I might slip in some other topics every now and then whenever I feel the urge to say something. I hope you'll like this new site of mine and that you'll write me some comments! Also, if you notice any bugs please let me know.

PS. I've kept my old guestbook here, however it's just for nostalgic reasons (probably more fun for me than for you) so it's not signable, only readable.
